Probably the most well-known Egyptian market, so popular that is referred to locals and many travelers as the Khan (market) – sounds intimidating but not very…
A brief history on Khan: Founded by the Emir Djaharks el-Khalili (see the resemblances in names) in 1382. The Khan market was an integral piece in why and how the Americas were discovered. This market had control of the goods moving East to West, so much that when the Khan market set up spice monopolies by the ruling Malmuks of Egypt, Colombus and his merry band of explorers were obligated to find alternative routes to the East.
Still today, the Khan El-Khalili is not exclusively an Egyptian market or a tourist trap. Goods from around the world arrive at the Khan, and the tourists will find themselves outnumbered by the many locals that shop there looking for jeans to jewelry.
What they have in vast amounts:
Leather Silver Egyptian Perfume, Essential oils Jewelry Hookahs, Water pipes… Home Décor, Lantern and what not Egyptian Art Glass – Perfume bottles, candle holders Musial Instruments Women accessories And of course the ubiquitous t-shirt and pyramid souvenir
