The world famous Road to Hana is known for its unblemished landscapes and towering waterfall scenery. Unblemished because that's all you'll see when driving through; the Hawaiians have successfully won stopping over development. And because they have kept over development at bay there are driving tips to consider when taking a trip to Hana.

Tip 1. Bug spray! Hana is swarming with mosquitoes. They congregate near the water and rotting fruit or animals. Don't stand so long admiring the river - you'll be sorry if you do.

Tip 2. Keep on paths. If you think on hiking, remain on paths. It's an obvious tip but some people like to go off-roading and that's when the magic happens: spider bites, a hell of alot more mosquitoes bites...and more bites in general...

Tip 3. Convertible car. Maui is great for convertibles - the Road to Hana though is the best part. When driving with the top down, expect a a panaromic viewing experience, a few more bugs, and a high chance of rain. When you do pull over, get off of the road completely. Do it slowly and safely. It's better to be cautious and wet than thrown off the cliff and wet or into an accident and wet.

Tip 4. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Dining choices in Hana are scarce. Take advantage of the scenery and mange.

Tip 5.  Always be camera-ready and have extra memory/film and batteries. Hana provides breathtaking shots.

Tip 6. If you're going hiking bring the shoes. Be knowledgeable about your hiking destination. Ask a Maui local for the best hiking routes. And of course...bring tall socks.

Tip 8. Stay overnight. The best way to enjoy Hana is by staying overnight. Though this can be difficult seeing that most places have a minimum night stay, you can find some places that take exception. If you do this, you will find that you'll miss the masses and have plenty of time to appreciate the beauty around you. Camping in Hana Is another option. You can do this for one night if you'd like and it's the best price you'll get for a stay in Maui.

Tip 9. Drive really fast around corners. Just kidding!! Drive slowly. The road to Hana is dangerous. The road has approximately 600 curves and 54 bridges, the Road to Hana is not only heaven on earth but a great way to see your afterlife with its winding roads, blind turns, constant traffic, distracting views, narrow one-lane roads, cliffs, and wet conditions, Hana Highway has proven its worth as a danger with many fatalities. Getting to Hana is not the gem of this trip; everything along the way is your reward.

Tip 11. Trespass. It is an important tip to observe if you want to be beaten by an angry Hana local.

Tip 12. Get banana bread. Some of the roadside stands are better than others, but all of them are good. They bake their breads fresh everyday, and sell so much of it, that they often bake through out the day. Fresh Hana Banana Bread isn't cheap, but is a delicacy while on the road to Hana.

Tip 13. Fill your gas tank to the top. Gas is even more expensive in Hana, if you can believe it. Plus there are no gas stations along the way from Paia to Hana. You don't want to run out of gas while on the road to Hana.
